Isabelle Pennington Boozer

Augusta, GA – Mrs. Isabelle Pennington Boozer, 99, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 16, 2024. Isabelle was born on July 21,1924 in Clarks Hills, South Carolina to the late Lewis Collins Rich and Isabel McBride Rich.

As a teenage volunteer in a tonsillectomy clinic at John de la Howe School, a physician recognizing her skill and empathy, suggested she consider the nursing profession. Isabelle went on to attend Columbia Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1945. She spent her career as a registered nurse at the VA Medical Center (Lynwood Division) and retired in 1979 after 34 years of service. As a federal retiree, she enjoyed her membership in NARFE.

The matriarch of the family, Isabelle was a strong and independent woman. Her family was priority. An ever-present caretaker, she invested in their lives with her time, guidance, and support. She served her family well – hauling belongings between homes pulling her red trailer, planting potatoes, transplanting irises and confederate roses, barbequing chickens, making squash casseroles and 7-layer chocolate cakes.

Caring, compassionate and selfless, she served her friends well – tending her multiple gardens to share tomatoes and beans along with the rest of the harvest, distributing peaches in the summer and apples in the fall, making time for frequent visits, and enjoying many group travels on a tour bus.

She enjoyed being outdoors and spent a great deal of time in her vegetable garden. Her pastimes included reading the newspaper daily, waiting on the mail, feeding and watching birds, fishing and cheering on the Braves. She was strong in her faith and her relationship with the Lord through prayer, devotions and church attendance. As a member of Trinity on the Hill Methodist Church, she participated faithfully, traveling with Love Unlimited Youth Choir, cooking Fellowships suppers, serving in the Prime Time ministry, and as a member of the Damren Sunday School Class.

Family members include her children: Paula P. Cartledge, Louis C. Pennington (Kay) and Jonathan R. Pennington (Dori); grandchildren: Alice C. Evatt, Henry M. Cartledge, Jr., Rachel M. Choe, Melanie P. Thomas, Stephanie L. Pennington, Bethany P. Mixon and Delta R. Pennington; great grandchildren: Amelia, Thomas, Caleb, Isabel, Matthew, Kaitlyn and Emmons. She was preceded in death by her husbands: Caleb E. Pennington, Jr. and Cecil E. Boozer; daughter: Susan P. McGee; granddaughter: Amelia I. Cartledge; and her siblings: Louise R. Barnwell and William M. Rich.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, April 20, 2024 at 11:00 A.M. at Westover Memorial Park with Rev. Roy McVeigh officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.

The family wishes to thank Prisma Health Hospice of the Foothills, particularly Christine Zuerner and Frances McGuffin whose care, compassion and love could not have been greater.
