J. Kenneth McDonald, Sr., MD
Evans, GA – J. Kenneth McDonald, Sr., MD, 86, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, May 30, 2018 after an extended illness. He was preceded in death by his parents: Dr. and Mrs. Robert H. McDonald (Elizabeth) and his brother: Robert H. McDonald, Jr. He is survived by his wife of 64 years: May Merry McDonald; by his son: Drs. J. Kenneth (Judy) McDonald, Jr.; daughter: Merry (Dr. John) Dirksen; and son: Robert (Jenny) McDonald; grandchildren: Robert J. McDonald, Carolyn (Dan) Asman, May Lauren (Patrick) Brinkman, Dr. Merry Ellen (Walton) Barnett, Darcy Dirksen, Kenneth M. McDonald, and Alden McDonald, as well as his brother: Jack B. McDonald.
Dr. McDonald was born and raised in Coweta County (Newnan), GA. He served as a Captain in the US Army at Fort Jackson for two years. He graduated from the Medical College of Georgia in 1956 and practiced psychiatry throughout the course of his life in Augusta, GA, first at University Hospital, and later, at Doctor’s Hospital of Augusta. He was involved in various aspects of the medical community in Richmond County, serving as a past Chief of Staff at Doctor’s Hospital, as well as a past president of the Richmond County Medical Society. During his career, he also served on the Georgia State Board of Health. In his semi-retirement, he worked for the Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Hospitals. He was known by friends and family for his sense of humor and his children remember his over-arching lecture which covered all aspects of life: Watch out for snakes.” This included, among other things, actually watching out for snakes.
Visitation will be held Saturday, June 2, 2018 from 10:30 until 11:30 A.M. at
Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors, 214 Davis Rd., Augusta, GA 30907. A graveside service will be follow at Westover Memorial Park beginning at 12:00 noon.
