Augusta, GA – Mr. J. Lester Newsome, 90, loving husband of 72 years to Mary Alma Alsabrooks Newsome, entered into rest at his residence, Tuesday, November 7, 2017.
Mr. Newsome was a lifelong resident of Augusta, a graduate of Academy of Richmond County and a member of St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church. He was Clerk of Board of Commissioners and Purchasing Agent of Richmond County for 21 years, and a loyal and dedicated Clerk of Superior Court for 12 years. Mr. Newsome was Past President of Association of County Clerks, Chairman of the Judicial District Clerks of Superior Court, a member of AMBUCS, and the Patrick Walsh Council of the Knights of Columbus.
Family members, in addition to his wife, include his son: Joseph L. “Joey” Newsome (Debbie); daughters: JoAnn Faulkner (Rick), Debbie Nevils Farr (Pat), Teresa Quarles (Doug); grandchildren: Louise Braden (Virgil), India Hawk (Tommy), Heather Newsome, Larry Elsey (Jennifer), Lawson Elsey, Christie Nevils, Joey Nevils, Angie Miller, Jay Quarles (Kelly), Blake Quarles (Mary), Rhett Newsome, Mary Brooke Grier (Sam), Heath Newsome, Sadler Quarles; 21 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; sister in law: Lexie Bonham and husband Carlton Bonham. Preceded in death by his parents C.S. “Bill” and Maude Usry Newsome; sister: Sarah Arnold; and son in law: Ronnie Nevils.
A funeral Mass will be Saturday, November 11, 2017 at 1:00 P.M. at St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church with Monsignor P. James Costigan celebrant.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Catholic Social Services, 811 12th Street, Augusta, GA 30901 or to the AMBUCS, 1820 Valley Brook Drive, Grovetown, GA 30813. Pallbearers will be grandsons and honorary pallbearers will be AMBUCS and Retired Superior Court Clerks. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Bill Neumann.
