The Reverend Jack Kirkus McVeigh, age 96, entered into the presence of the Lord he so faithfully shared about on Wednesday morning, January 18, 2023, at his residence on Millstone Church Road in Carlton, Georgia.
Jack was born in Chauncey, Dodge County, Georgia on July 2, 1926, son of the late James Bithan McVeigh and Mary Ophelia Kirkus McVeigh. He served his country faithfully in both the United States Air Force and Navy, totaling 22 years of service to our grateful nation.
Always one to believe in the power of education, Rev. McVeigh was a graduate of Brewton Parker College, University of Maryland, Valdosta State University, Seminole State College, and Athens Technical College. Jack was passionate about sharing the Gospel of Jesus, and he did so as a Baptist minister for 56 years, most notably at Falling Creek Baptist Church. He was extremely proud that both his son and grandson followed in his footsteps as ministers.
He was always willing to serve his beloved Elbert County Community in anyway possible. This lead Rev. McVeigh to serve on the Board of Directors of the Salvation Army and as former president of the Elberton Historical Society.
In his free time, Jack loved exploring in nature and was particularly found of hunting for arrowheads. He also enjoyed traveling and bird watching - never seeing a bird he couldn’t call by name.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Willie Pauline Yawn McVeigh; daughter, Gail Drane; one grandson, and six siblings.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy Marie Bell Bradford McVeigh; children: Ethel Hitt of Elberton and Roy McVeigh of Augusta; six grandchildren grandchildren and their spouses; and seventeen great-grandchildren.
The family is at their respective residences and will receive friends at Berry Funeral Home on Thursday evening, January 19, from 6 o’clock until 8 o’clock.
