Jackie Poteet

Augusta, GA – Joan J. “Jackie” Poteet, 84, entered into rest on Monday, October 28, 2024. Jackie is preceded in death by her husband, Howard Wilson Poteet; her parents, T.V. and Thelma Johnston; and her sister, Barbara Anne Kinard. 

She is survived by her daughter, Marcy Stone Billings (Kevin); son, Mark Stone; grandchildren, Melissa Kate Strickland (Jesse), Kyle Evans (Kelli), Morgan Tucker (Logan), Molly Ketusky (Jonathan), Brayden Stone, and Ryan Billings; great-grandchildren, Noah Strickland, Olivia Strickland, Shepard Evans, Leland Ketusky, and Henry Tucker; and her sister, Charlotte Frederick (Don). 

Jackie was a native of Olar, South Carolina and went on to build a life in Augusta, GA. Family was the most important thing to her. She was generous with all that she had, and those dear to her knew what a joy and honor it was to be loved by her. 

Jackie is remembered fondly for having the best sense of humor with a love for laughter and dancing – always ready for the next adventure. Outside of family, she was a driven, successful businesswoman. She started an apartment referral service in the early 70s. Apartment Finders was based in Augusta and serviced the whole CSRA. 

Later Jackie expanded her company, becoming a publisher of the Augusta Apartment Finders Guide. After that success, she opened a referral office in Macon while publishing the Macon/Warner Robins Apartment Guide. She then opened her third office in Savannah and started publishing the Savannah Apartment Guide. In 2000, she retired when HAAS Media purchased all three publications.

A private family burial will be at Lawtonville Cemetery in Estill, South Carolina. The family would like to sincerely thank all of the staff at Thrive at Augusta for making her last three years of life as comfortable as possible. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
