Augusta, GA – Mrs. Jacqueline (Jackie) Kennedy (née Phenix) died peacefully at Augusta University Medical Center on March 29, 2023 in Augusta, Georgia at the age of 80.
Jackie is survived by her son, Andrew Albert Kennedy of Ann Arbor, Michigan, her brother, Maurice Phenix of Fall River, Massachusetts, her sister, Madeleine Rocklein, of Boise, Idaho and eight nephews and nieces.
Jackie was born on December 4,1942 in Fall River, Massachusetts to Fabien and Irene Phenix. In 1968 she graduated from Stonehill College in Easton, MA with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and began work as a cytologist at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, MA. After moving to the Los Angeles area in 1970, she worked as a cytologist at Good Samaritan Hospital. In 1972 she married Howard Wood and was widowed in 1977.
In 1981 Jackie married F. Frederick Kennedy, Jr. of Augusta, GA. In the next few years Jackie and Fred welcomed two beautiful sons into the family: Frederick Matthew in 1983, and Andrew Albert in 1986. Jackie was deeply involved in the children’s education and worked with numerous social and community organizations as well. She was a volunteer worker with Augusta Ballet and served on its board at one point. Upon the death of her husband, she became involved with the St. Mary on the Hill Widows’ Group and established the F. Frederick Kennedy, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund with the Boys and Girls Club of Augusta. For more than two decades she coordinated the neighborhood sock project for the Golden Harvest Food Bank. She loved working at the Sacred Heart Cultural Center Gift Shop and participating in Bible Study at St. Theresa’s. Upon the death of her son, Fred, in 2014, she formed the FMK Memorial Debate Scholarship at Westminster and has continued its funding since then.
A Mass celebrating her life will be held on Monday, April 10th at 11 a.m. at St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church in Augusta, GA. All are welcome to attend. In honor of her memory and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Golden Harvest Food Bank or the Boys and Girls Club of Augusta.
