Jake Barnes

Newport, TN – Entered into rest on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, Mr. James “Jake” William Barnes, 87, loving husband of 58 years to the late Mrs. Barbara  “Bobbie” Clayton Barnes.

Jake was a native of Augusta, Georgia but lived the last fifteen years in Newport, Tennessee. A devout master carpenter who finished his career working for J. C. Stockton.  His presence was strong as well as his handshake and even though he was strong-minded he was respected by his fellow employees. Jake could repair and build anything, he loved to read and to tell stories about his experiences. Jake was a loving and devoted father, grandfather and great grandfather, but when he would whistle all knew to come running.

Family members include his children: Diane McGlothlin (Johnny), Vicki Bragg (Billy) and Darryl Barnes (Janice); grandchildren: Amanda Clark (Jeremy), Megan Cashen (Wade), Leslie Ramirez (John), Kasey Crosby (Joseph), Christian Bragg (Samantha), Chad Bragg, Anna Ramsey (Taylor) and James Barnes (Anna); great grandchildren: Maddie Clark, Jackson Clark, Brooks Cashen, Matthew Crosby, Emma Crosby, Noah Crosby, Ace Bragg, Bridger Bragg, Aron Bragg, Mayson Black and Brody Ramsey and brother: Benny Hall. He was preceded in death by his parents Leroy Barnes and Sara L. Brown.

The funeral service will be held Wednesday, December 27, 2023 at 11:00 A.M. in the chapel of Thomas Poteet & Son with Rev. James Barnes officiating. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Pallbearers will be John McLeod, Earl Williams, Johnny McGlothlin, Billy Bragg, David Coley and Ray Myers.
