James Alfred Blissit
Augusta, GA – Entered into rest Wednesday, April 29, 2015, Mr. James Alfred Blissit, 92, husband to the late Mrs. Erie P. Blissit and Mrs. Marianne Blissit.
Mr. Blissit was born in Locust Grove, GA in 1922 to Alfred Otis and Annie Mae Price Blissit. He was a native and lifelong resident of Georgia. Two years after high school Mr. Blissit began a career with the University of Georgia that spanned 40 years. He started as an accountant in 1942 with the Board of Regents; served in the Army in WWII and returned to the Board of Regents to become Vice Chancellor by 1951. Among the many successful programs he developed was a self insurance program covering the buildings and equipment of the University System; that and many of the programs that he developed were adopted by the State of Georgia for other departments. He was well known not only in Augusta, but throughout Georgia for his wise stewardship of the University System’s money. He retired in 1981, having spent the last 13 years before retirement as Vice President of the Medical College of Georgia where he skillfully guided the college through the years of expansion with honesty, integrity and fairness.
He was a member of First Baptist Church of Augusta and attended St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church with his wife. Mr. Blissit was a member of the Exchange Club of Augusta and the Augusta Country Club.
Family members include daughter: Patricia “Pat” Larkins (David) of Arizona; son: James A. Blissit, Jr. (Olga) of Texas; step-daughters: Martha Best (Roy) of Georgia and Grace M. Hayles (Joe) of Alabama; step-son: Frank L. Kelly (Helen) of Georgia; daughter-in-law: Maria Blissit of Ohio and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Alfred Otis Blissit and Annie Mae Price Blissit, siblings Mae Blissit Coan, Susie Blissit Hansard, Edward Blissit, and Dr. Joe Blissit.
A graveside service will be Monday, May 4, 2015 at 11:00 A.M. in Westover Memorial Park with Rev. Dr. Joe Bowden officiating. Pallbearers will be Franklin Kelly, Jr., Benjamin Best, Colton Wheatley, Winston Walker, David Highsmith, and Brandon Ellis.
