James B. Carpenter
Retired Air Force Colonel
Augusta, GA – Entered into rest July 8, 2010, James Barrie Carpenter, 78, beloved husband of Mae Mulherin Carpenter after an extended illness.
Col. Carpenter was born in Omaha, Nebraska in 1932, the son of Ivan H. and Bessie J. Carpenter. Col. Carpenter graduated from Benson High School (1949) and the University of Omaha (1953) when he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. During his 21 year Air Force career, he served first as an Instructor and a Military Airlift Command Navigator. Later, following receipt of the Masters of Science degree in Psychology from Oklahoma State University (1964) and Ph. D. degree in Industrial Psychology from Purdue University (1969), he served as Research Psychologist with the Air Force Human Resources Laboratory in San Antonio, Texas. He was the recipient of the Outstanding Contribution to USAF Research & Development Award in 1973. During his 1969 tour in Vietnam, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and multiple air medals among the other military awards achieved during his career.
Retiring from the Air Force in 1975, Col. Carpenter taught Statistics and Managerial Science at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas and at Georgia College & State University in Milledgeville, Georgia, serving as the Management Department Chairman at both Business Schools and authoring numerous professional journal articles. He retired from GC&SU in 1998 as Management Department Chairman Emeritus. Since 2000 he resided in Martinez, Georgia and was an active member of Christ the King Lutheran Church.
Col. Carpenter was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Sylvia M. Carpenter. Family members include, wife: Mae Carpenter, daughters: Karen C. Hall (Marc) of Montgomery, Alabama and Kelly A. Carpenter of Sharpsburg, Georgia, grandchildren: Bethany Hall, Laura Hall, Lee Hall, and Lyman Connell Allen IV.
Funeral services, with full military honors, will be held Monday, July 12, 2010 at
2:00 PM in Thomas Poteet & Son Chapel with Rev. David Keener officiating. Interment will follow in Westover Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association, 2452 Spring Rd., Smyrna, GA 30080.
The family will receive friends one hour before service at Thomas Poteet & Son, Funeral Directors, Monday, July 12, 2010 at 1:00 PM to the time of service.
