James Bartow (Jim) Duncan, III, passed away on May 14, 2023, in Jaco, Costa Rica. A native of Augusta, Georgia, he was preceded in death by his father, James Bartow Duncan, Jr.; his mother, Anna Barbara Cheesborough Duncan; and his granddaughter Lacy Elaine Putnam. He is survived by his fiancée, Cherry Camancho; his sister, Denise D. Rosenzweig (Paul, Jr.); his brother, Randall W. Duncan (Beth); his daughter, Laura D. Johnson-Putnam (Josh); his two sons, Richard B. Duncan (Elsa); Matthew J. Duncan (Patrick); his five grandchildren; and his great grandchild. He is also survived by his former wife and the mother of his children, Cynthia Black Duncan of Augusta.
Mr. Duncan graduated from the Academy of Richmond County in 1965. He studied business at Augusta College, graduating with a Bachelor of Business Administration in 1969. He was conferred a Master of Business Administration by Georgia College in 1972. In 1987, he was admitted to the practice of law in Georgia after being conferred a Juris Doctorate by the Atlanta Law School. In 1975, he opened Augusta’s most successful fresh seafood market, Island Seafood. As an attorney, he founded and managed a successful bankruptcy law practice, later establishing a well-known DUI defense law firm.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 3rd, 2023, at 11:00 AM, in Westover Memorial Park. The family will receive guests at the graveside at 10:00 AM prior to the service.
