Augusta, GA – Entered into rest on Sunday, July 3, 2022, Mr. James Harold Gebhard, 82, loving husband of 54 years to Deanne Gebhard.
Jim was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and he grew up in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. He was drafted into the Army on May 17, 1963, at the age of 23. His first exposure to Augusta, GA was when he attended Basic Training to become a military policeman. He subsequently served in France and Germany from 1964 to 1966. In 1966 he was discharged as an enlisted man and attended Officer’s Candidate School at Fort Benning, GA. He was commissioned in 1967 as a Second Lieutenant in the Military Police Corps. He served as instructor here at Fort Gordon, and as a Company Commander, before deploying to Vietnam in 1969, just in time for the Tet Offensive. Jim served bravely in Vietnam, earning a Bronze Star.
Jim’s last tour here in Augusta ended in 1972. He served one more year in Benton Harbor, MI, before the Army released him due to the end of the Vietnam War in 1973. Jim returned to Augusta after leaving the Army and had a long career in real estate with several brokers, including Bowles and Meybohm.
He will be best remembered by his family and friends as a true outdoorsman, who grew up hunting and fishing. He loved nothing more than walking his dogs at the lake. He would go out of his way to help absolutely anyone. Our community has lost a great man.
Family members, in addition to his wife include his sisters Barbara Gebhard and Kathy Naruo.
Visitation will begin on July 16 at 10am at Wesley United Methodist Church, followed by a memorial service at 11 am.
Memorial contributions may be made to Wesley United Methodist Church, 825 N. Belair Rd, Evans, GA 30809.
