James “Jim” R. Riordan, Sr.

Aiken, SC – Mr. James “Jim” R. Riordan, Sr., 76 entered into rest on Monday, November 24, 2014 at Aiken Regional Medical Center.

Jim was born in Morristown, New Jersey to J. Christopher and Elsie Riordan. He attended Drew University in Madison, NJ for his undergraduate degree where he played golf and basketball. He then went on to get a MBA from Fairleigh Dickinson University in Rutherford, NJ. He also served his country during the early 1960s in the U.S. Army and was stationed at Fort Dix, NJ.

Jim spent most of his career in the book publishing paper industry and of the more than thirty successful years he spent in the business, much of it was as an executive with the Perkins & Squier Paper Company based in New York City. Beginning there as a salesman, he rose to the position of President and Chief Operating Officer in 1993. Throughout his career, he also taught college-level courses in Sales and Marketing.

An avid golfer, Jim played competitively as a member of his high school and college golf teams. For decades he and his family were members of the Mendham Golf and Tennis Club in Mendham, NJ where he frequently played with his two sons. He recorded two holes-in-one while playing over the years – one as a young man in his teens and another while playing with his family in Sarasota, FL.

Jim met his wife Liz while attending Drew University in the late 1950s and they were married in 1961. They lived in Evergreen, CO, and Morris Plains, NJ before settling in Chester, NJ. They retired to Aiken in 2004 to be closer to their grandchildren.

Jim was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather; thoroughly enjoying time spent with his four grandchildren, Paige, Sean, Amy and Jimmy. He loved all of them very much and when he spoke about them, he was always beaming with pride. They would fish with him in Aiken or hang out with him at the beach on Harbor Island, SC.

Family members include his wife Elizabeth of Aiken, SC; children: James R. Riordan, Jr. of Martinez, GA, Jonathan R. Riordan of Advance, NC; four grandchildren, and his brother John C. (Jack) Riordan of Falmouth, ME. He was preceded in death by his mother and father.
