Augusta, GA – James Monroe (Jimmy) Johnson, 82, beloved husband of Evelyn Beckum Johnson, entered into rest Sunday, December 21, 2014.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son: James M. (Jay) Johnson, Jr. of John’s Island, SC; a daughter: Lynn Johnson Salters (Frank) and granddaughter: Annabelle Lynn Salters, all of Orlando, FL; a brother: Jerry S. Johnson of Allamogardo, NM; and several nieces and nephews.

He was a graduate of Richmond Academy, attended Georgia Tech and graduated from Georgia State College in Atlanta, GA. He was a member of the Chi Phi Fraternity.

Upon graduation from college, he received his commission as Ensign in the United States Navy, and served on active duty at the U.S. Submarine Base in New London, CT. After his honorable discharge, he rejoined the Naval Reserve and served for thirty-seven years retiring as Captain and Commanding Officer.

He joined Johns Manville Sales Corporation in 1958, and worked for twenty-three years in the Pipe Division.

Jimmy was an avid outdoorsman, and enjoyed many years of hunting, fishing, and raising bird dogs. His later years were enjoyed with his wife and family at Seabrook Island, SC.

He was a charter member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church and served as Chairman of its first Administrative Board, as well as in other capacities through the years. He was also a member emeritus of the Exchange Club of Augusta.

Funeral services with Navy Honors will be held Saturday, December 27, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. at Aldersgate United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Jim Higgins and Rev. Alan Smith officiating. Interment will follow in Westover Memorial Park. Honorary pallbearers will be: Brad Bennett, Edward F. Moody, Dr. James Becton, E.W. “Sonny” Reece, Harry C. Vaiden, Allen Strickland, Scott Langham, Mike Duckworth, Charles Anderson, and the Exchange Club of Augusta.

Memorial contributions may be made to Aldersgate United Methodist Church Building Fund: 3185 Wheeler Road, Augusta, GA 30909 or to the Jud Hickey Alzheimer’s Center: 1901 Central Avenue, Augusta, GA 30904.
