Mr. James Donald “Donnie” Tate, 66, of Evans, GA, formerly of Elberton, passed away on Tuesday, August 15, 2022, at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta.
Mr. Tate was born in Elberton on August 27, 1955, son of the late Jefferson Davis Tate and LeeOnnie Dickerson Tate. He was a 1973 graduate of Elbert County High School and earned a Bachelors in chemistry and physics from Berry College. Donnie later attended the University of South Carolina where he studied Pharmacology and Anesthesia, and received a Bachelors in Nursing from the Medical College of Georgia.
He worked in OB/GYN at Kapiolani Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Honolulu and retired from the Veterans Administration Hospital in Augusta where he worked as a nurse anesthetists.
Donnie was an avid University of Georgia fan and an excellent cook. He enjoyed attending concerts, especially opera and symphony, and looked forward to The Masters each year.
Survivors include his nieces: Crystal Payton Bond and Heather Payton Montgomery, both of Elberton; nephew, Jeffery Payton of Elberton; great-nieces: Lexi Payton of Hartwell and Brianna Montgomery of Elberton; great-nephews: JR Payton and Kaden Montgomery, both of Elberton; great-great-nephew, Aaron Cain of Hartwell; aunt, Dorothy Parkman of Elberton; special friends: Cynthia Johnson of Elberton and Greg and Vicki Dixon of Anderson, SC; and numerous cousins and other friends.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by an infant niece, Miranda Elaine Payton; and his sister, Jane Tate Payton.
A celebration of Donnie’s life will be held on his birthday, Saturday, August 27, at Berry Funeral Home. Family and friends will meet from 1:00-3:00p.m. to share stories and special memories. Donnie would like for those attending to wear bright and happy colors to represent all of the happy times spent with one another.
