Janie Outlaw Branch

Augusta, GA – Entered into rest on Sunday, August 29, 2010 at Kentwood Nursing Facility, Mrs. Janie Outlaw Branch, widow of the late Elias W. Branch of Augusta. Mrs. Branch is predeceased by her daughters Norma Revelle Branch (infant) and Ruby Branch Kassner. She is survived by her grandchildren: Karen Stambaugh of Ridgeland, MS, Christopher Kassner of Gulf Breeze, FL, and David Kassner (Teru) of Augusta; great-grandchildren: Joshua Alan Stambaugh, John David Kassner, Paul Stewart Kassner and James Branch Kassner; and nieces and nephews: Sylvia Brown of MacClenny, FL, Carolyn Mullis of Baxley, GA, Guyton Branch of Vidalia, GA, Ron Shelton of Oak Ridge, TN and Frank Wheeler, Jr. of Nicholls, GA; and long time dear friends, Leonard and Marilyn Syphrit of Augusta, GA.

Mrs. Branch was born in Alamo, GA in 1908, graduated from Wheeler County High School in 1927, and married later the same year. After moving to Warrenville, SC with her family during the Depression she operated and supervised looms at the Graniteville Company and managed a family-owned grocery store. She moved to Augusta in 1950 and sold women’s clothing at the Broad Street stores Goldberg’s and Carr’s Town and Country for many years. At home she was an avid gardener, cook and seamstress.

Mrs. Branch came to a living faith in Jesus Christ during her childhood through an evangelistic outreach in her hometown. She later joined the Methodist Church and used her teaching gifts for decades in children’s and adult education. She was a charter member of Cokesbury United Methodist Church where she taught the Janie Branch Sunday School Class and served in the choir and United Methodist Women.

Mrs. Branch’s family wishes to express their thanks to the staff of Kentwood Nursing Facility, her home for more than eight years, and to her long-time physicians Drs. Fred Merrill and Alex MacDonnell.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 1, 11:00 a.m. at Cokesbury United Methodist Church with Rev. Perry Shelfer and Rev. Ken Wilson officiating. The family will receive friends, Tuesday, from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Thomas Poteet and Son and one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow at 4:00 P.M. at Friendship Church Cemetery, Baxley, GA.
