Jean Veronica Tilt, beloved wife of the late William "Bill" Tilt for 50 years, passed away peacefully on March 28, 2022.
Jean was born in Brooklyn, New York on January 13, 1944, to Anne and James McNeil. Her father passed away when she was only 18 months old. Jean and her sister, Maryanne, were raised by her mother and maternal grandparents, Mary and Henry Haarer, in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn. Jean graduated from The Grace Institute of Manhattan’s secretarial school and worked as an executive secretary in New York City.
Jean married Bill, her soldier boyfriend of many years, in 1970 and followed him wherever the Army stationed the young couple. They moved eight times in their first 10 years of marriage then settled in Augusta, Georgia where they raised their three children and were members of St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church.
Jean always had a delicious home-cooked meal on the table for her family when not traveling to soccer games and other activities for her children. She loved to decorate their home for every holiday and enjoyed any excuse for a small celebration with her family. She was a loving wife, mother and “MeMe” to her grandchildren.
Jean is survived by son Michael, his wife Lisa and their children, Kaitlin and Alexis; son Douglas, his wife Rhonda and their children, Elizabeth and Patrick; and daughter Laura, her husband Mark Gilliam and his son, Nicholas (Rose).
The family thanks everyone at SouthEast Hospice who gave their mother care, compassion, and the gift of music for the last six months. Beverly Maynor cared for Jean for almost two years with excellent skill, kindness and always a smile. She was a blessing to both Jean and her daughter. Mary Pat Seal and Angela Alexander were also wonderful caregivers. The family appreciates them and all others who cared for Jean.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church in Grovetown on Friday, April 1st at noon with Fr. Theodore Agba as celebrant. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the narthex of the church. Burial will follow in Westover Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church, 4921 Columbia Road, Grovetown, GA 30813 or The Alzheimer’s Association, 106 SRP Dr, Evans, GA 30809.
