Jennie Pollard
APPLING, Ga. - Jennie Floyd Pollard passed away peacefully in the comfort of her home on January 10, 2016. She was born on July 29, 1927 in Tillman, SC to Lucille Malphrus and Milton Jones Floyd but her sense of propriety led her to gently remind all who asked that “a woman who will tell you her age will tell you anything.” Affectionately known as Jinx, she attended both grammar school and high school in Wagener, SC where she was both a talented member of her high school basketball team and the 1944 class valedictorian.
Jinx then attended Berry College where her love of singing led her to join the Concert Choir. After she graduated in 1948, she continued singing throughout her life to her children and grandchildren and for the Lord as a member of the Kiokee Baptist Church Choir where she joyfully served for decades. She could also be found leading the children’s choir before church every Sunday and spearheading the church’s summer VBS program—both of which she coordinated for decades. She also started and taught several adult Sunday school classes as well as a Training Union program at one point on Sunday nights.
Not only did Jinx love to sing, she also loved to dance. She met the love of her life Robert William Pollard at a dance in Lincolnton, Ga. shortly after arriving in Appling to teach home economics at Leah High School. They were married on March 5, 1949 and they enjoyed a happy union of 46 years before he preceded her in death in 1995. During that time, she faithfully and dutifully served by his side in their home and in their community as well as in their business which she helped build—Pollard Lumber Co., Inc. During that time she served on the board for Columbia County Board of Child and Family Services. She was also an avid Georgia Bulldog fan and her family will miss celebrating with her between the hedges on crisp fall Saturdays in Athens.
Jinx always made sure her husband and children enjoyed ample mid-day meals and will be remembered by many for her fine Southern hospitality, exceptional generosity, charming sense of humor, and amiable and engaging personality.
Jinx's love for her family, church and community is eclipsed only by her love for the Lord Jesus Christ. Her family takes great comfort in knowing that she is once again whole and her greatest song and rejoicing began the moment she met her gentle Savior. She is survived by one brother, Rush Malphrus Floyd of Edgefield, SC, and her four children Robert William Pollard Jr. (Tricia), Patty Pollard Blanton (Dan), Levi Anderson Pollard V (Cindy), all of Appling, Ga, and Lynn Lucille Pollard of Atlanta, Ga. She is also survived by her eleven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren who will miss their Meme very much.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm Tuesday evening at Kiokee Baptist Church, 2520 Ray Owens Rd, Appling, in the Fellowship Hall.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 13, 2016 at 11:00 am at Kiokee Baptist Church with the Reverend Steve Hartman officiating. Pallbearers will be her grandsons.
Memorials may be made to Kiokee Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 430, Appling, GA 30802.
