Augusta, GA – Jerry Brooks Dye departed this life on Saturday, August 31, 2013, at University Hospital, surrounded by his loving family and friends. He was born in 1937, in Augusta, to L. P. and Mary Ruth Wood Dye. He is survived by his wife of over fifty years: Jane M. Dye; his children: Jerry B. Dye, Jr., Lynn Smith (Craig), Laura Evans (Marc); six grandchildren: Taylor Marie Smith, Rebecca Brooks Smith, William Smith, Anne Travis Evans, Christopher Evans, and Mary Frances Evans. He is also survived by his two brothers: Larry Dye (Peggy) and Leonard Dye (Sylvia), and several nieces and nephews.
He graduated from the Academy of Richmond County in 1955 and then from North Georgia College in 1959, where he graduated as a Distinguished Military Student. He then attended the Mercer University School of Law, graduating in 1962. Subsequent to his graduation from law school, he served two years as a First Lieutenant in the US Army before beginning the practice of law in Augusta in 1964. He was commended by the State Bar of Georgia for 50 years of service, and he practiced law in Augusta for 47 years. He served for 38 years as the attorney for the Augusta Economic Development Authority, making him one of the longest serving development authority attorneys in Georgia history. He was honored by the Authority's Board of Directors, who voted in 2010 to create the Jerry B. Dye Academic Scholarship at Augusta Technical College. He was further honored at his retirement by a Resolution of the House of Representatives of the State of Georgia, commending him for four decades of outstanding, efficient, and effective service to Richmond County.
He was a long time member of St. Augustine of Canterbury Episcopal Church, serving as Chancellor for many years and serving multiple terms as a vestryman. He also served at various times as Jr. Warden and Sr. Warden for the church. He later became an active member of the Church of the Good Shepherd, serving as a Lay Eucharistic Minister and an enthusiastic member of the greeter committee. As a developer, he was instrumental in the development of Westlake Subdivision, and other subdivisions in Columbia County, and was a founding member of Westlake Country Club, where he served as a member of the Governing Board. He was a long-time member of Augusta Country Club, the Pinnacle Club, the Augusta Bar and the American Bar Association. Most of all, he adored his six grandchildren, and was an enthusiastic fixture at all birthdays, sports and school events. He will always be lovingly remembered by them all as the founding member and sometimes “President” of the “Buddy Club.”
The family wishes to thank all of those who provided their devoted service and loving care especially the fifth floor staff at the Georgia War Veteran’s Home, Leon Lewis, and the nurses and doctors at University Hospital.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at 11:00 AM at the Church of the Good Shepherd, 2230 Walton Way, Augusta, GA 30904, with the Reverend Robert D. Fain, the Reverend Dr. Andrew Menger, and the Reverend Lynn Prather officiating. Pallbearers will be Dr. J. Nicholas Powell, Thomas R. Burnside III, William M. Wheeler, Harrell S. Tiller, Jack W. Wilson, and Walter C. Sprouse, Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be the Board of Directors of the Augusta Economic Development Authority. Interment will be private.
The family will receive friends following the service at the home of Craig and Lynn Smith, 3067 Walton Way.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that charitable contributions be made to the Church of the Good Shepherd, 2230 Walton Way, Augusta, GA 30904.
