Augusta, GA – Entered into rest on Wednesday, December 21, 2022, Mr. Jerry Wayne Mattox, 72, loving husband of 50 years to Mrs. Cheryl Pierce Mattox.
Jerry was born in Macon, GA. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran who served in Vietnam. Jerry was a long-time member of Abilene Baptist Church. He worked at Savannah River Site as radiation control before retiring after 30 years. Always a jokester, he was also a loving and devoted husband and father known affectionately as “Opa” by his grandchildren, which he adored. Jerry was an avid fisherman, loved woodworking and spending vacations with his family.
Family members in addition to his wife Cheryl include his daughter: Kelly N. Johnson (Ray); son: Chadwick Mattox; grandchildren: Dalstin Mattox, Caiden Mattox, Mattox Johnson, and Audrey Johnson; brothers: Kent Mattox (Christine)and George Mattox and his faithful canine companion: Marley. He was preceded in death by his parents Marcus and Esther Mattox and sister-in-law Lynne Mattox.
The funeral service will be held Monday, December 26, 2022 at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors with Rev. Bill Harrell officiating. Interment will follow in Abilene Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ed Lepley, Ben Peacock, Mike Scott, Keith Mattox, Bryan Mattox, Daniel Mattox, Isaac Nye and Wesley McKinney.
