Jewel G. Whitten

Augusta, GA – Jewell G. Whitten, wife of the late Retired Major Carson D. Whitten, Jr., passed away peacefully Sunday, September 3, 2023. She was 98 years old.

Jewel was born July 9, 1925, in Birmingham, Alabama and was the daughter of Charles F. Glazner, Sr. and Estelle Mae Glazner. She met her husband on a blind date, and they married January 26, 1947. They had three children and made Augusta their home after Carson retired from the Army in 1963.

In addition to her husband and parents, Jewel is preceded in death by her daughter: Jane Estelle Whitten Wooten; her brother: Charles F. Glazner, Jr. and her niece: Deborah Mae Glazner Ryan. She is survived by her children: Carson DeWitt Whitten, III and his wife Martha of Rock Hill, SC and Nancy Whitten Lunde and her husband Brian of Grovetown, GA; four grandchildren: Amanda “Mandy” Whitten of Lancaster, SC, Jared Whitten of Greensboro, NC, Leslie Whitten Goff and her husband Peter of Redding, CA. and Andrew Lunde of Grovetown, GA; nine great grandchildren: Dickson Nash, Judah Nash, Gideon Nash, Wren Nash, Adah Nash, Mattie Nash, all of Lancaster, SC, Ezekiel Goff, Dahlia Goff and Emmanuel Goff all of Redding, CA.

One of Jewel’s passions was baseball as her father pitched for the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 1920’s. She was an avid fan of the Augusta Green Jackets and was an honorary member of the Diamond Club. She was a member of the Eastern Star Martinez Chapter 464, earning her 50-year pin in 2019, a lifetime member of the Augusta Shrine Club Ladies Auxiliary and the Go-Cart Unit’s Ladies Go Getters.

Visitation will be Saturday, September 9, 2023, at 1:00 P.M. at Thomas Poteet & Son with a memorial service following at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, 950 West Faris Rd., Greenville, South Carolina 29605.

The family would like to thank Enhabit Home Health and Hospice services for the kindness, compassion and support they have given over the past several months, especially Mandy, Dallas, Jennifer, Hope and Chaplain Jared.
