Augusta, GA – Entered into rest Sunday, March 18, 2018, Mrs. Joan F. Thorpe, 90.

Joan Thorpe was a native of Queens, New York City, NY. She moved to Augusta forty-one years ago to join the Alleluia Community. Graduating with her RN from Misieracordia Hospital Nursing School, her early nursing career included picking up premature babies throughout the greater New York City area and transporting them to hospitals by ambulance. She worked at several hospitals including Elmhurst Hospital, Phoenixville Hospital and St Joseph's, Augusta. She concluded her nursing career at Gracewood Hospital, GA, as Director of Infectious Disease Control.

She is survived by her sons; Thomas B. Thorpe (Deb) State College, PA, John F. Thorpe (Terri) Brunswick, GA, Andrew L. Thorpe, Augusta; daughter: Marie Louise Muir (Gary) Augusta, She is predeceased by her husband, Robert Thorpe, son, Stephen J. Thorpe, Acworth, GA, and her parents, Frank Steele and Helen (Wynne) Steele. Her parents immigrated to New York City from Prince Edward Island, Canada prior to her birth. She cherished visiting and spending time with her many cousins in PEI from the Steele and Wynne families during her lifetime. She had seven grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.

The family would like to thank St. Joseph's Hospice, Anita and William McKie, Mona and Gerald Hebert, Cecilia Meredith and Jessica Veines and members of the Alleluia Community who assisted with her care during her last week and death. She received loving in-home care from those who loved her dearly.

The funeral Mass will be Monday, March 26, 2018 at 10:00a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Augusta, GA, with Fr. Mark VanAlstine celebrant. Burial will follow in the Alleluia Community Cemetery in Dearing, GA. A Memorial Service will be held Sunday evening at 7:00 p.m. at St. Joseph Church.
