JOAN KETTLES WANNER
Augusta, GA – Entered into rest Monday, April 9, 2018, Joan Kettles Wanner, 89, wife of 61 years to the late Donald F. Wanner, Jr. She was born in Gary, Indiana. She graduated from the National College of Education in Evanston, IL with a BA in Education. She taught first grade in Indiana for several years. Joan married Don in February 1957 and willingly assumed the role of mother to his two children, Claudia and Fritz from a former marriage. They had a third child, Megan. They all shared a very happy family life. Joan was very active in craft work throughout her life at home and at the church. Joan was active in the community and was a lifetime member and former president of the Augusta St. Joseph Hospital Auxiliary. She was a former Lioness and served for many years as the worship chairman at St. Mark United Methodist Church. She also served on the Guild Board of Sacred Heart Cultural Center.
Joan was a homemaker, wife and mother. She followed her husband and his career from Indiana through Richmond VA, Augusta, and Atlanta, then to Wilmington, DE and finally back to Augusta by choice at retirement in 1985.
Survivors include her children: Donald F. (Fritz) Wanner, III in Big Canoe, GA and Megan Gwinn of Newark, DE; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Don and daughter: Claudia Shearer of Augusta, Ga.
A memorial service will be Friday, April 13, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mark United Methodist Church with Rev. Linda Birchall officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
