John Dowdy

Augusta, GA - Entered into rest on Sunday, October 8, 2023, Mr. John Hilbert Dowdy, 84.

He was a man who cherished life, embraced friends, and possessed a heart full of boundless care. He leaves behind a legacy of love, devotion, and a zest for life that will forever warm the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him. He was a man who loved the Lord.

Born in Augusta on January 12, 1939, John was a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather who found his greatest joy in the love and companionship of this family.

John was a man of his word, someone you could always count on in times of need. One of John’s most unforgettable traits was his laughter - a laugh so contagious and infectious that it had the power to brighten even the darkest of days.

A passionate supporter of the Georgia Bulldogs, John wore his team’s colors with pride and followed their every victory and defeat with unwavering loyalty.

John is survived by his loving wife Bonnie Dowdy, his children: Susan Dowdy (Steven), Lauri Dowdy (Breau), John Dowdy, Jr. (Rhonda), Christian Dowdy, Serena Dowdy, Brian Haskins (Katie), Carrie McElreath (Ben), and Stacey Garner (Reed); and 10 grandchildren: Sarah Dowdy, Jessica Dowdy, Adeline Dowdy, Lilliana Dowdy, Henry Steffes, Hollis Haskins, Benjamin McElreath, Hughes McElreath, Caroline Garner, and Eloise Garner. He is preceded in death by his father John Franklin Dowdy, mother Vanis Sue Pittman Leroy, and sister Karen Franqui.

The memorial service will be held Thursday, October 12, 2023, at 11:00 A.M. at Trinity on the Hill with Rev. Roy McVeigh officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, beginning at 10:00 A.M., at the church.
