John Gibson

Augusta, GA – Entered into rest on Wednesday, December 7, 2022, John Clayton Gibson, 75, loving husband of Katharine Farr Gibson.

John was a native of Hamlet, NC, but lived most of his adult life in Augusta, GA. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in two tours in Vietnam. He retired as a Sergeant First Class from Fort Gordon with 20 years of service. He worked as a correctional officer for another 20 years retiring from Augusta State Medical Prison. He was a member of Saint Mary on the Hill Catholic Church. He enjoyed carpentry and piddling in his workshop.

Family members in addition to his wife include his son: Jonathan Gibson (Stacey); grandchildren: Ryan Gibson and Caitlyn Smith (Trevor); siblings: Linda McGuire and Rev. Alan Gibson (Pam); several nieces and nephews; and his beloved great niece, Kayden. He is predeceased by his parents: Harold Clayton Gibson and Elizabeth Gibson; and his brother-in-law: Frank McGuire.

The funeral service will be held Friday, December 9, 2022, at 11:00 A.M. in the chapel of Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors with Father Mark Ross officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service beginning at 10:00 am at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Westover Memorial Park.
