John L. Buckley
Augusta, GA – Mr. John L. Buckley, 93, entered into rest on Sunday, August 31, 2014.
Born and raised in Augusta, GA he was the son of John and Ella Buckley. He graduated from Mount St. Joseph Academy, Richmond Academy, and the University of Georgia. John was a member of St. Mary On-The- Hill Catholic Church. He is preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Evelyn (Val) Van Kuiken Buckley.
Mr. Buckley honorably served his country in the United States Army and bravely fought in the European Theater during World War II as well as the Korean Conflict. He received 2 Purple Hearts along with many other medals and commendations. Upon returning from Korea he was presented with the Key to the City of Augusta in recognition of his acts of heroism. After retiring from the Army as a Major he worked for Goodwill Industries in Savannah, GA and in the Civil Service Education Division at Fort Gordon, GA.
John was an avid stamp collector, a history buff, enjoyed traveling, and took great joy in decorating his home at Christmas.
He is survived by his son: Jack Buckley; daughters: Marcia Evans, Diane (Dee) Buckley; granddaughter: Chelsea Evans; sister: Patricia Boerner (Bob); brother: Don Buckley (Rosie); sister-in-law: Helen Van Kuiken Darsnek; and 34 nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass will be Thursday, September 4, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Mary On-The-Hill Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Westover Memorial Park.
