John M. Chambers
Augusta, GA.--John M. Chambers left this world due to sudden heart failure on April 18, 2017. He is survived by his loving wife of over 64 years, Mignon, his two daughters, Kim and Liz, as well as 7 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Also mourning are his 3 sisters, Martha Mason, Janean Baker, and Margie Moseley, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Chambers was born on May 5, 1930 to Ira K. Chambers and Mae Allene Myers in Dothan, Alabama. He earned a Bachelors degree from Georgia State University, but was forever devoted to his high school, Americus High School in Americus, GA. He wore his high school ring for the entirety of his life after graduating from there.
The other ring he wore with devotion was also acquired in Americus, where he met and married his eternal sweetheart, Mignon Shell. They had been wed less than a year when he was drafted and sent to Japan, where he served honorably and received a good conduct medal.
When he returned from service he took an accounting position with Goodyear in Akron, Ohio, where his 2 daughters were born. But his heart was forever in the South, so he brought his family back to Georgia, working at what was then Medical College of Georgia in computer administration from 1966 to his retirement in 1992.
The last several years of his life were spent in devoted service to his wife who had been stricken with Alzheimer's Disease. In lieu of flowers, the family gratefully requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association at www. alz.org
A service will be held on Saturday, April 22 at 11am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2108 Eastland Dr., Augusta, with internment to follow at Westover Memorial Park, 2601 Wheeler Rd., also in Augusta.
There will be a viewing at the church building at 10am for an hour prior to the service, Saturday, April 22, 2017.
