John F. Mell, Jr.
Evans, GA – Entered into rest on Tuesday, May 30, 2023, Mr. John Francis Mell, Jr., 90, loving husband of 29 years to Mrs. Joyce Skiba (Lewis) Mell.
John was born in Thompsonville, Connecticut. He graduated from the University of Connecticut in Storrs and was a member of the Theta Xi fraternity. He joined the United Sates Air Force ROTC program at UConn. The Air Force sent him to Meteorology school at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Upon successful completion he was stationed at US air bases in Great Britain. After his discharge as a Captain, he worked for Johns Manville for over 20 years. He began as an Engineer and finished his career with JM as Vice president of Operations. He then spent several years in textile manufacturing before finishing his career in sales in the adhesives industry.
John retired in Duluth, Georgia and began traveling the world with his wife Joyce. Together, they journeyed the world setting foot on all seven continents and visiting nearly 300 countries. Many of their adventures were with the Friendship Force organization. John recently made the Augusta area his home, residing at Brandon Wilde. He enjoyed baseball and was an avid Braves fan.
He was preceded in his passing by his parents, John Francis Mell Sr. and his mother Sophia Katherine (Tokarczyk) Mell. Surviving family members in addition to his wife include his son: Robert John Mell (Jolene); daughters: Karen Patricia Sheridan (Dean), Kathleen McLean and Jane Marie Mell Balek (Paul); grandchildren: Kade Sheridan, Maureen Hammond (Stuart), Erinn Reilly (William), Brenda Alto (Ryan), Emma Jane Balek, Katherine Flynn Balek, Mary Christine Mell and Sarah Elizabeth Mell.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 3, 2023 at 11:00 A.M. in the chapel of Thomas Poteet & Sons Funeral Directors with Dr. Donald Prosser officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
