Grovetown, GA – Entered into rest Sunday, November 22, 2009, Mr. John R. Shaffer, Sr. 88, husband of Margie Shaffer of Grovetown.
Mr. Shaffer was born in Phenix City, AL and grew up in Columbus, GA. He joined the Merchant Marines during WWII and served on the USCG William J. Palmer until it was sunk by an enemy mine. Following the war he worked as a draftsman for the Georgia Power Company. John and Margie were married 57 years and he was a loving husband and father. He retired as a self employed drywall contractor. Mr. Shaffer was a member of Wynnton United Methodist Church in Columbus, GA.
Additional family members include his daughters: Peggy Jean Wajdowicz of Oxford, CT, Sheila Ruth Shaffer of Montgomery, AL; son: John R. “Rip” Shaffer, Jr. and wife Brenda of Evans, GA; 7 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; brother: Rex Shaffer of Huntsville, AL; and a sister: Betty Kormylo of FL.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 25, 2009 at 12:00 noon in the chapel of Thomas Poteet and Son with Chaplain Stephen M. Russ officiating. Entombment will follow at Bellevue Memorial Gardens.
