Mr. John Robert Baxter, Jr.
Magistrate Court Judge
Augusta, GA – Entered into rest Saturday, February 19, 2011, Mr. John Robert Baxter, Jr., 86, husband of Norma Thomas Baxter.
Mr. Baxter, a native and lifelong resident of Augusta, was a member of St. Augustan’s Episcopal Church and former member of Christ Episcopal Church Augusta. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1943 and served in WWII. After WWII he was recalled for the Korean War, serving in the Naval Air Force. Mr. Baxter and his wife were married in 1944 and celebrated 67 years of marriage until his death. He was an avid Georgia Bulldog fan. Judge Baxter held the bond hearings for the Magistrate Court in Richmond County, and he was always known for showing those that appeared before him with great respect and kindness. He was loved and respected by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Family members in addition to his wife include his daughter, Beverly B. Kesel and husband Leonard of Martinez; grandchildren: Kimberly A. Koss and husband Charles (serving in Bagdad, Iraq) of North Augusta, Shannon A. Minor and husband Derrick of Raleigh, NC; great-grandchildren: Shannon Katherine Koss, Clare Baxter Koss, both of North Augusta, SC, Billie Emma Minor of Raleigh, NC; sister, Juanita Baxter Dantzler of Augusta; and five wonderful sister-in-laws: Mary Ann Ergle, Nillar Rooks, Elizabeth Key, Doris Thomas, and Louise Thomas. Mr. Baxter was predeceased by his three sisters: Agnes Showalter, Mabel Roberts, and Naomi Key.
Funeral services will be held Monday, February 21, 2011 at 1:00 P.M. at St. Augustine’s with Rev. Canon Neal Phelps and Rev. Jason Haddox officiating. Interment will follow at Westview Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Earl Roberts, Leroy Roberts, Josh Key, John Key, Robert Thomas, Anthony Key, Howard Hartung, David Bass, Vernon Clark, and Frank Thomas. Honorary Pallbearers will be The Hon. William Jennings, The Hon. Scott Allen, Alan Smith, Ronald Strength, Charles Webster, Freddie Sanders, William Faulkner, Emmet Faulk, Members of the Marshall’s Dept, and Member of the RCSD Transportation Department.
