Augusta, GA – Mr. John Robert Harlan, 85, beloved husband of Mrs. Annette Duggan Harlan for 53 years, died unexpectedly Friday, January 3, 2014.
Mr. Harlan was a native of Hagerstown, IN but lived in Augusta since 1970. He was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church and an Eagle Scout. He was a graduate of Wabash College and was a history major. Mr. Harlan was a retired Lt. Colonel for the United States Army Corp of Engineers with 21 years of service. He served in Japan, Turkey, France, and Korea and served two tours in Vietnam. Mr. Harlan received numerous military awards including the Legion of Merit. He worked for Sherman and Hemstreet for more than 40 years and was a member of the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors. Mr. Harlan was a member of the West Lake Country Club and treasured his many golf friends. One of the special pleasures of his life was serving as Treasurer of the Harlan Family in America for 25 years.
Family members in addition to his wife include daughters: Nancy Harlan Gooding (Bill) of Evans and Jane Harlan Beson of Summerville, SC; grandchildren: Ben Gooding, Matt Gooding, McLean Beson, John Beson, Chris Harlan, Mary Jayne Harlan- Tucker and Autumn Harlan-Tucker; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Harlan was preceded in death by his son: Matthew Duggan Harlan and grandson: Zachary Ryan Harlan.
A graveside service will be held, Monday, January 6, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. in the Stanley Family Cemetery.
