Augusta, GA – John William (Jack) Thompson, 85, went to be with his maker at University Hospital on April 5, 2010. He was born in Williston, SC, the son of the late Mr. Harry M. Thompson and Lessie Rountree Thompson.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Fowler Thompson, nieces, nephews, grand nieces, and grand nephews.

He attended Clemson College, graduating in 1949 after an interval of military service in the European Theater in the U.S. Army Signal Corps, during and after World War II.

After his graduation, he moved to Augusta, GA, and was a registered architect practicing until his retirement in 1992. He was a member of The Augusta Chapter of The American Institute of Architects, which he attended from 1949, until his death.

He was a very active member of First Baptist Church of Augusta, for 60 years, serving as a member, a member of The Men on Missions for 40 years, Deacon, Sunday School teacher of 5 year old children until he and his wife retired from that activity in 1982, and many other activities. After his retirement from teaching Sunday School, he returned to be a member of The Apollos Sunday School Class.

In his early years in Augusta, he was a very active member of the Augusta YMCA. He served two terms on the Board of Directors, and two terms as a member of the Southern Area Council of YMCA’s in Atlanta.

Funeral services will be held in the Sanctuary of First Baptist Church of Augusta, on Wednesday, April 7, 2010 at 2:00 P.M. with Dr. Greg Deloach officiating, assisted by Dr. Jack Robinson. Interment will follow at Westover Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be nephews and great nephews. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Board of Deacons of First Baptist Church, his Sunday School Class, and the Augusta Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

Memorials may be made to the Chapel Fund of First Baptist Church of Augusta,
3500 Walton Way Ext., Augusta, GA 30909.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, beginning at 1:00 P.M. preceding the service in the Church Rotunda.
