Colonel John Charles Winkler

Augusta, GA – Entered into rest on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, John Charles Winkler, 84. Family members include his daughter, Jill Dromsky and husband Dr. Joe Dromsky of Augusta, GA; and daughter-in-law, Tina Winkler of Fredericksburg, VA. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brother: Jerry Winkler of Parsons, Kansas, sisters: Julie Sprott of Santa Fe, New Mexico and Joyce Hamlin of Austin, Texas. John was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 62 years, June Sopko Winkler of Stony Point, New York, and son John Charles Winkler, II. 

John graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1962. He served 2 combat tours in Vietnam as a member of the 101st Airborne Division, and was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He received his MBA from the University of Georgia in 1970, afterwards focusing on Information Systems Technology and Infantry Training Development during his 27 year Army career. After military retirement in 1989, John and June made Evans, GA their home, while John continued to work for EER Systems Corporation at the U.S. Army Signal Center at Fort Gordon.

He shared his love of bass fishing and bird and deer hunting, learned in his hometown of Caney, Kansas and ensured his family experienced them as well. Golf also ranked high, and in retirement John was a regular at Gordon Lakes Golf Club.

John, along with his late wife June, will be interred together at Arlington National Cemetery.
