Augusta, GA – Retired Sergeant First Class Johnnie M. Jones, Jr., 75, entered into rest peacefully surrounded by family and friends at Eisenhower Army Medical Center, Fort Eisenhower Georgia on Sunday, February 18, 2024. Johnnie was a decorated veteran who served in the Vietnam War (1969-1970) and actively served his country for 22 years in the United States Army.
Johnnie Milton Jones, Jr. was born October 21, 1948, in Willacoochee, Atkinson County, Georgia, to the late Johnie Milton Jones and Dorothy Mae Jones. He attended and graduated from Atkinson County High School in Pearson, Georgia in 1966 and shortly thereafter attended Thomasville Area Technical School in Thomasville Georgia and graduated in June 1968. After graduation from Thomas Area Technical School Johnnie enlisted into the United States Army on June 20, 1968. After completing Basic Training at Fort Benning Georgia and AIT at Fort Gordon, Georgia Johnnie was soon assigned to the 15th Signal Brigade and stationed to serve his country in the Vietnam War. After serving in Vietnam (1969-1970) Johnnie's continued military career would take him to many parts of the world…within the U.S. and abroad. The first being Fort Hood, Texas and then Panama, Central America…where he would meet and marry his loving wife of 51 years, Hilda Jones on September 5,1972. Johnnie and Hilda’s military travels together would take them next to Fort Lewis Washington…where their son Javis would be born, then Hanau Germany…where daughter Lisa made her entrance into the world (born in Frankfurt Germany). His next station assignment would return him and his family to the United States, Fort Gordon, Georgia then back to Aschaffenburg, Germany. He would complete his final years in the military with his last three tour assignments taking him to Fort Monmouth, N.J., Seoul, Korea then returning to Fort Gordon where he retired with full Honors from the United States Army.
During his military career retired Sergeant First Class Johnnie M. Jones, Jr. was awarded the following decorations, medals, badges, citations and campaign ribbons: National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, Humanitarian Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon and Expert Marksmanship.
After 22 years of military service as a Communication Maintenance Support Chief, Biomedical Equipment Specialist and Electronics Training Instructor Johnnie embarked on a second career adventure as a Senior Field Service Technician with Ricoh where his technical professional experience in electronics and communication from the military and education once again equipped him serve not only as a valued team member and representative but also as a trainer and mentor where he remained until achieving his second retirement. Before and after retirement Johnnie served as a faithful member and Deacon at Mount Myriah FreeWill Baptist Church in Willacoochee Georgia. He enjoyed watching old westerns, playing his guitar and keyboard, fishing, tinkering with electronics, building his own computer, exploring new barbecue dining experiences, being spoiled by everyone bringing him his favorite snacks, and traveling.
Johnnie was predeceased by Johnie M. Jones Sr.(father), Dorothy Mae Jones(mother), Lorenzer Jones(brother), Dorothy Jones Gaskin(sister), Frank Jones(brother) and Mark W. Jones(brother). He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Hilda Martinez Jones, with whom he shared 51 years of marriage and built a loving and supportive home, creating a strong foundation for their family; son Javis Jones (Kristy) of Martinez, GA; daughter Johanna MeLisa “Lisa” Jones of Augusta, GA; five grandchildren Jaida L. Jones, Javis M. Jones, Jr. Jordan X. Jones, JeVante Blount, and Janyiah Jones; three step-grandchildren Armanin L. Sheard, Jaylen J. Sheard, Zion D. Sheard; brothers Delamar Jones (Betty), Timothy Jones (Beverly), Curtis Jones (Jill) and sister Ardie Marie Ragland; Honorary granddaughter Diamond R. Butler. and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Johnnie will be remembered by those who knew him as a man that loved his family and friends and has left behind a legacy of helping others without expecting anything in return or seeking acknowledgement. He was a caring son, beloved husband, loving father, kind grandfather, considerate brother, caring uncle and devoted friend.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 24, 2024, at 11:00 A.M. in the chapel of Thomas Poteet & Son with Pastor Troy Jackson officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
