Grovetown, GA – On June 14, 2018 Joseph Penny, 87, went to be with his heavenly father at his home after an extended illness. He is preceded in death by his parents John and Lottie Penny and two brothers Gordon (Helen) Penny and Jake (Rosemary) Penny.

He is survived by his lovely and devoted wife of 52 years, Elizabeth South Penny and their two daughters Tracy (Robert) Gambrell and Tina Penny as well as grandchildren Grace Gambrell and Robert Clayton Gambrell, Jr. In addition, he is survived by his two brothers Ken (Sonya) Penny and Guy (Kay) Penny, four children Joseph Penny, Jr., Teresa Beach, Christina Breece and John Penny and multiple grandchildren and great-grandchildren who live in California.

He was originally from Piedmont, Alabama and graduated from Piedmont High School, Itawamba Junior College in Fulton, MS and Livingston State University in Livingston, Alabama on a football scholarship where he received his BS degree. Joe was a Veteran of the US Airforce and while in London he coached the football team, the London Rockets, and won the USAF championship in 1956. After leaving the service, he received his MA Degree from Peabody College in Tennessee. He was an educator and began his teaching career as a Social Studies teacher and a football coach. Later in his career he was the principal of Sue Reynolds, Monte Sano, Roy Rollins and his last 10 years at T. Harry Garrett Elementary School, where his portrait is in the library. He was president of the West Augusta Rotary Club from 1975-1976.

Joe had a great sense of humor and loved working with wood, as he was fondly called “The Wizard of Wood.” He loved his family, grandchildren, woodworking, Alabama football, and going to Tybee Island. He set an example of hard work, determination and honesty to reach your goals. He loved going to Trinity on the Hill UMC and Pastor Greg Hatfield will be officiating a private service for family and close friends.
