Judith (Judy) Mitchell McAlister returned to her heavenly home unexpectedly and peacefully on December 1, 2017 in Augusta, Georgia.
Judy was born to Terrell Albert Mitchell and Laura Cook Mitchell in Savannah, GA. She received her nursing diploma from St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing in Savannah, GA in 1963 and she graduated from the Medical College of Georgia with a Bachelors of Science in Nursing in 1968. She was an active member of Sigma Theta Tau - Honorary Nursing Society, Beta Omicron Chapter. Judy began her career as a staff nurse in Savannah in 1963, and began working at the Medical College of Georgia in 1965, holding many positions including Staff Nurse, Instructor, Clinic Coordinator, and Utilization Management Analyst. She retired from the Medical College of Georgia after 38 years of faithful service. She was an active member of the American Nurses Association, the Medical College of Georgia Alumni Association, and St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association – where she attended frequent reunions and managed a nursing scholarship fund in Savannah.
Judy was an active member of her church and the community. She sang in the church choir many years and was active in many Sunday school and Bible study classes, including advanced Bible study through the BSF and Precept programs. She was proud of her membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution. She started as a Junior Member in Savannah and held various offices during her 44 years as a member. She was an asset to the Augusta Chapter, where she was well respected and loved. Some of the offices she held include Chapter Treasurer, Finance Committee, Auditor, Member of the By-laws Committee, and Corresponding Secretary. Judy was also a beloved member of the Soil Sisters gardening club.
Judy is survived by her husband of 34 loving years, Thomas E. McAlister; her son and daughter-in-law John and Susan Glover of Roswell, GA; her sister Carolyn M. Williams of Bartlett, TN; and her sister Winifred M. Ingram of Elma, WA. She’s preceded in death by her parents and her parents-in-law Claude and Margaret Pope; and her brother Terrell A. Mitchell, Jr.
A memorial service is scheduled at 3:00 PM on Saturday, December 9, 2017 at Lakemont Presbyterian Church in Augusta, GA. The family will receive friends following the service in the Church reception hall. It was her wish that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Lakemont Presbyterian Church or Georgia Children’s Hospital.
