Julia Hicks

Julia Garvin Hicks passed away peacefully in Evans, Georgia on August 24, 2024, at the age of 92. Born in Menlo, Georgia, on March 3, 1932 to the late Louise and Norman Garvin, she grew up on her family’s remarkable farm there, where they raised cattle and tended pecan and peach orchards.

She attended the University of Georgia, earning her Bachelor of Home Economics degree in 1953. For the next few years, she worked as a UGA Extension Agent in Calhoun, Georgia. While there she caught the eye of a certain ex-marine by the name of James Hicks who soon became the love of her life. They were married on April 14, 1956. In their early years together, they resided in Cedartown, Georgia and started their family with two sons.

In 1968, a career change brought the Hicks family to Thomson, Georgia which has remained the home town ever since. She was an active member of the Belle Meade Hunt, where she enjoyed many close friends, family, and great memories together. It all started out as something of a boy’s sport, but not one to be left out she quickly bought her own horse and learned to ride, soon becoming a Hilltop Field Master for the hunt on her appaloosa horse named “Bob Wire”. She maintained a beautiful home on Washington Road in Thomson where she kept fig trees, cherry trees, and a bountiful garden. She kept many well stocked bird feeders around the farm, and every summer hummingbirds by the scores would flock to her porch where she was constantly mixing juice by the gallons to stock her hummingbird feeders. A determined woman with high standards, she made sure that everyone around her was up to the mark.

She is survived by her husband, James R. Hicks Sr.; her sons, James (Julie) Hicks Jr. and Norman (Elizabeth) Hicks Sr.; grandchildren, Perry Hicks, Alex (Gemma) Hicks, Norman (Jessica) Hicks Jr., Jamie Hicks, and Grace Hicks; great-grandchildren, Riley and Atticus Hicks; a sister, Edith Morehead; and many nieces and nephews.
