Mr. Julian Vaughan “Sonny” Casey, 76, of Augusta entered into rest on Thursday, January 26, 2012 at his residence surrounded by his family. A Vigil service will be held on Sunday, January 29, 2012 at 7:30 pm at St. Mary on-the-Hill Catholic Church. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, January 30, 2012 at 12 noon at St. Mary-on- the Hill Catholic Church with the Reverend Gerald Ragan officiating. Interment will follow in Westover Memorial Park.

Mr. Casey was born in 1935 to the late Mr. & Mrs. Gerald W. Casey in Augusta, Georgia. He graduated from Boys Catholic High School and then attended the University of Notre Dame where he earned his football numeral as a freshman. He transferred to the University of Georgia where he earned his varsity “G” and then coached the University’s freshmen team. After graduation from UGA he served his country in the United States Infantry attaining the rank of Captain. He had a long career in commercial real estate in Augusta and resort sales at Wild Dunes on Isle of Palms, South Carolina. He also served as Chairman of the Board of Dixie-Riverside Inc.

While at UGA, Sonny met and married, his best friend and the love of his life, Patricia Martin of Decatur, Georgia. Sonny and Pat have enjoyed 53 years of marriage while sharing their special love with their five children. In addition to his wife, Pat, he is survived by his daughters, Cathy C. Bentley (Bobby), Terri C. Snead (Derek) both of Augusta, Erin C. McGee (Terry) of Jacksonville, Florida, Karen C. Gentile (Keith) of Sumter, South Carolina and his son, Richard M. “Dick” Casey (Shay) of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. Grandchildren, Reed (Cassidy) Bentley, Brett Bentley, Megan, Austin, Tyler and Marshall Snead, Matt and Molly McGee, Josh Gentile, Doyle and Anna Casey. He is also survived by a sister, Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Casey of Augusta.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gerald and Anna Casey, a brother Richard “Dick” Casey (Iwo Jima), a sister Anne V. Casey and his beloved grand-daughter and “Sunshine”, Casey Marie Bentley.
Sonny was a member of St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church, UGA Football Letterman’s Club, Augusta Country Club, Augusta Golf Association, the “Wal-Mart” golf group and R.O.M.E.O.’s lunch group in addition to being a charter member of the Irish-American Heritage Society of Augusta.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons and honorary pallbearers will the AGA.

The family will receive friends Sunday evening after the Vigil service in the church Narthex and following interment Monday at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Bobby Bentley, 824 Barrett Lane, Augusta.
