Kasper F. Fulghum
Augusta, GA - Kasper Ferber Fulghum, Sr. passed away quietly, just as he always wished, on Sunday, June 24th, 2018 in the place of his birth, Augusta, Georgia. He was 101 years young. He paved the way for three children, 7 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren to carry his legacy of quiet leadership, strength and love of God and church.
"Kap", as we fondly remember him, was born on October 24th, 1916, a child of unlimited horizons and love provided by his mother, Rosa Clare (Ferber) Fulghum and his father, Hardy Hilliard Fulghum, Jr.
He experienced, setbacks, hardship and challenges, but never let it dampen his drive or enthusiasm. Surviving the Great Depression, he was a cadet at Richmond Academy, Class of 1935. Kap was one of the cadet security guards at what is now known as "The Masters", being paid in pimento cheese sandwiches. Lettering in four sports, he received a football scholarship to Oglethorpe University, where an unsportsmanlike play ended his college career. He returned home to finish his education and care for his widowed mother. He then joined the National Guard and subsequently, the United States Army.
Kap was a WWII veteran, proudly serving with the 222nd Batallion Combat Engineers from the Port of Oman, North Africa (where upon disembarking, he saw streets being paved with Augusta brick), up through Sicily with General George S. Patton. Then he moved onward to Northern Italy, staying months after the surrender, to secure the safe return home of his fellows.
He returned home to marry the beautiful and sassy Lucy Nell Hiller ("Toots", to all who knew her), with whom he had three delightful children: Kasper Ferber Fulghum, Jr., Judith Clare (Fulghum) McDougal (Arthur A. McDougal) and Roseann (Fulghum) Blacher(Joel I. Blacher). They provided Kap with 8 brilliant and talented grandchildren: Michelle Leigh Fulghum Brandenburg(Mark Brandenburg), Kasper Ferber ("Trey") Fulghum, III (Paula) Fulghum, Linsey Clare McDougal, Mary Catherine McDougal, Alexandra Hiller (Fulghum)Moran( Anthony Moran), Lucy Kathleen (Ewalt) Bailey(Everett Cullen Bailey IV), Ferber Buckley Fulghum, Lukas Fulghum and Nicholas Fulghum, who then, continued the legacy with 7 brilliant and beautiful great-grandchildren: John Brandenburg, Grace Brandenburg, Everett Cullen Bailey,V, Millie Bailey, Harper Fulghum, Wyatt Kasper Moran and Hazel Marie Moran.
Kap was born in a horse and buggy time and lived to see a man put on the moon. He ran a successful business in Greenville, South Carolina and had a wonderful life, but he was most proud of this large family; he never had that growing up.
Kap also leaves behind his loving and dear friend, Florence "Fluff" Storey of Brattleboro, Vermont, who gave him many more years of companionship and laughter, after the passing of his beloved "Toots." Fluff, her daughter Sue Story and Sue's husband Tom Briodo have always provided us with a much-appreciated warm hearth, with every visit to balmy Vermont.
To all of his many friends, too numerous to mention: Kap always kept you in his prayers and good thoughts (particularly his heaven-sent caregivers, Wendy Fore and her daughter, Taylor Fore and Debbie Wells). We are sure, that he will continue with this.
Toots preceded Kasper in heaven and is waiting there for him. It will not be a long wait, they can always use more true Southern gentlemen there.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the church where Kap was baptized and from which, will now be buried; The funeral Mass will be Wednesday, June 27, 2018 at 12:15 P.M. at the Church of the Most Holy Trinity with Fr. Jacek Szuster celebrant. Burial will follow in Magnolia Cemetery.
