Augusta, GA – Entered into rest on Sunday, September 28, 2014 at University Hospital, Katharine M. Cundey, 76, wife of Dr. Paul E. Cundey, Jr.
Mrs. Cundey was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA, the daughter of Hannah and Richard S. Zerbey. Her siblings have all preceded her in death, Richard, Margo, Betty Jean and Maryann. She was a graduate of St. Mary’s Academy in Philadelphia, 1955 and the Fitzgerald Mercy School of Nursing, 1958. She worked at the Einstein Hospital, Northern Division until 1963. At that point, she and her husband moved to Fort Eustis, Virginia. In 1965, they moved to Augusta, GA. She was active in the American Heart Association and was Chairman of the Heart Fund Drive in 1977 with Mamie Eisenhower as Honorary Chairman. She was active in the Richmond County Medical Alliance and the Sacred Heart Guild. She was also a member of the St. Mary’s Altar Guild and the Augusta Country Club. She was an active member of her Ladies Investment Club, the BBB, until her final illness.
In addition to her husband, family members include children: Richard and his wife Neisha, Paul III and his wife Tanya, Heath and his wife Catherine, and Elizabeth and her husband Richard; grandchildren: Zachary, Hannah, Marie, Paul IV, Mary Katharine, Braylin, Rachael, Sarah, and Kendall.
A funeral Mass will be Thursday, October 2, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church with Fr. Gerald Ragan celebrant. Following the Mass, the family will greet friends in the Parish Hall. Burial will be private. Pallbearers will be Richard D. Cundey, Paul E Cundey III, Heath J. Cundey, Richard N. Boggs, Zachary D. Cundey and Paul E. Cundey IV.
The family requests no flowers be sent and if so desired memorial contributions may be made to the University Healthcare Foundation, 2100 Central Ave., Suite D-1 Augusta, GA 30904 or to the Aquinas High School Endowment Fund-Scholarship C/O Development Office: 1920 Highland Ave, Augusta, GA 30904.
A vigil will be held at St. Mary on the Hill at 6:00 PM on Wednesday evening with a visitation to follow beginning at 6:30 P.M. in the church.
