Retired Teacher
Augusta, Ga -Mrs. Kathryn May, the loving wife of Dr. Gerald May, passed away on January 30, 2010 at the Medical Center of Georgia after an extended illness. Mrs. May spent most of her life in the Augusta area. In addition to her loving husband of 48 years, she is survived by her beloved daughter, Anne Marie Barlow (husband, Brent) and grandchild, Colton Barlow. She is survived by her brothers, Edward Fox of Hopewell, VA (wife, Mildred) and Joseph Fox of Milledgeville, GA (wife, Claire). Other family members include sister-in-law: Anita Selvagn, nephews: Stephen May (wife, Mary Ellen) and Donald May (wife, Bonnie); great-nephews: Sam and Scott May, and a great-niece: Susie May. Mrs. May is preceded in death by her parents: Frances and Edward Fox. She is also survived by her beloved pets: Angel, Jasper, Bella and Tigger.
Mrs. May derived great satisfaction from her teaching career of 38 years, predominately at South Columbia and Blue Ridge schools. She was selected as Columbia County’s Teacher of the Year three times during her career. She was a finalist for Georgia’s Teacher of the Year. Furthermore, she was recognized for her teaching endeavors by being chosen for Columbia County’s Conservation and Environmental Award as well as the Conservation Teacher of the Year for the state of Georgia and the U.S.A. National Award. Mrs. May was also the Project Wild Teacher of Georgia and the EPA’s National Presidential Environmental Youth Project.
Community involvement was also a priority for Mrs. May. She was on MCG’s PPG and Patient Advisory Committees. She was a charter member of the Savannah River Site Advisory Committee and served on Columbia County’s Local Emergency Committee. She was a member of St. Mary’s on the Hill as well as the Suburban Women’s Club. Mrs. May used her prize-winning skills in photography and writing to publish articles.
Appreciation goes to the CSRA Gynecological Support Group and to Drs. McFee and Ghamande for their care. Thanks are also extended to Dr. Shlaer for his care and support over the years.
The funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, February, 3, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at St Mary on the Hill Catholic Church with Fr. Mark VanAlstine celebrant. The Vigil for Deceased will be Tuesday evening at 6:30 at Thomas Poteet and the family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m.
