Augusta, GA – Entered into rest on Thursday, May 9, 2024, Mr. Harold Kenneth Young, Jr., 71, loving husband of Joy Martin Young.
Kenneth was a native and lifelong resident of Augusta, GA. He was a 1971 graduate of Butler High School and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in biology from Augusta College. He worked in research at the Medical College of Georgia for several years before taking a job at Savannah River Site, where he retired as a superintendent of procedures and operations.
Kenneth was a master naturalist and avid bird enthusiast. Kenneth spent much of his free time outdoors where he loved to photograph all aspects of nature, particularly the diverse bird population that inhabits Phinizy Swamp. Kenneth spent so much time at the Phinizy swamp that he eventually began to guide tours of the nature park for new visitors. Some of the photographs taken by Kenneth in the nature park went on to win awards in the photography community. If Kenneth was not behind the camera, he was likely to be found on his bike enjoying the Augusta canal trail, the greenway, and even the occasional ride down the highway. He was an active member of Lakemont Presbyterian Church where he also used his time to volunteer with the Sunday school classes and children’s programs to teach about the outdoors.
Kenneth was a kindhearted and gentle man. Kenneth never met a stranger and his love for others is a blessing he bestowed upon everyone who had the opportunity to enjoy his presence.
Family members in addition to his wife include his sons: Hunter Young and Jarrad Young (Betsie); daughter: Rachael Young; grandchild: Gage Young; stepson: Banks Tate; sister: Sue Young Strange (John); and nephew: Taylor Strange.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, 3:00 PM at Lakemont Presbyterian Church with Pastor Jerry Gay officiating. The family will receive friends before the service from 2:00 until 3:00 P.M. at the church.
