December 6, 1919 - April 27, 2018

Augusta, GA - Lynden Daniel (Dan) Martin, a resident of Augusta for 65 years, died unexpectedly on April 27 during a minor heart related procedure at Augusta University Hospital. He was 98 years old.
Dan grew up in the small upstate New York town of Fonda, attended Middlebury College in Vermont, and after college worked for DuPont in Niagara Falls, NY. While at DuPont he met the love of his life, Mary Reynolds; they were married in 1945 and celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary on April 5, 2018. He served in World War II as a Japanese interpreter and was in Japan after the atomic bombs were dropped. With the ending of the war, he returned to Niagara Falls and continued his work for DuPont. He was transferred to the Savannah River Plant near Aiken, SC in 1952, established his residence in Augusta, and retired in 1978.
Dan is survived by his wife Mary and three children: Robert (Sheree) Martin of Atlanta; Sandra (Ron) Blount of Athens, GA; and David (Melinda) Martin of Vancouver. Washington. He and Mary also have 6 grandchildren: Scott Martin of Griffin, GA; Page (Ben) Guillot currently living in Hong Kong, China; Laura (Wade) Meredith and Mark Bouldin of Atlanta; Caitlin Martin and Miriam Martin of Vancouver, Washington. Further, they have 3 great-grandchildren, Emma Guillot and Jack Lynden (his namesake) Guillot currently in Hong Kong, and Jaden Flynn of Carlton, GA. Although Dan was the first of his family to go to college, all his children and grandchildren have accomplished college degrees and graduate degrees, and all are in successful careers. He always delighted in their achievements.
Dan was a member with Mary at Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Augusta since the mid-60s where they were active in a variety of ministries such as the Senior Saints.
He and Mary were involved for over 50 years in square dancing, including serving as President of the Georgia State Square Dancing Association from 1978 to 1980 and as editor of the State Square Dancing Magazine, the Dixie Crier, for many years. They even danced at President Jimmy Carter’s inauguration in 1977. For the last 15 years, Dan has sent computer generated personalized birthday cards to each member of the square dance groups to which they belong – Masters City Squares and Richmond Reelers.
In 2016, Dan attended the 75th reunion of his beloved Middlebury College accompanied by 11 family members. He was the only one of five surviving alumni there who could walk up the hill to the chapel. He entered the reunion ceremony at the chapel to a standing ovation with the President of Middlebury on one side and his youngest granddaughter on the other.
Dan was also a proud patron of the Masters Golf Tournament for over 55 years, and family members have come to Augusta each year in April, regardless of where then lived in the world at the time, for a family reunion at Masters time.
Visitation for friends will be at Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors, 214 Davis Road, from 6pm to 8pm on Friday, May 4. The funeral service will take place at Aldersgate United Methodist Church on Wheeler Road at 1pm on Saturday, May 5.
