Laura Catherine "Cathy" Peeler Gibson

On Friday October 13, 2023, following an extraordinarily courageous six-year battle with cancer, Cathy Gibson finished her last race as an incomparable winner. 

Cathy, a resident of Travelers Rest, SC for the past 18 years, passed away exhibiting the same kind of strength and resolute commitment which she displayed in the half marathons she loved to run.  Cathy was born December 16, 1956, to Barney and Bonnie Hamrick Peeler in Forest City, NC, and was the youngest of three sisters, including Evelyn Peeler Biddy and Betty Ann Peeler.  Cathy attended East Rutherford High School in Bostic NC, where she was involved in numerous activities including band, where she was elected “Band Queen”.  Subsequently, she was accepted into and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she met and later married her college sweetheart, Greg Gibson. 

During her working career, Cathy had a broad range of experiences that included positions with the NC Governors Highway Safety Program, Duke Energy’s Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant, Arthur Anderson, LLP, and as a contract IT Programmer at Michelin USA.  Similarly, she had a diverse range of interests ranging from running, reading, and caring for her dog babies, to biking tours in Europe with her Cliffs Valley bike buddies, weekly Bridge games with her Bridge partners and Bible studies with more of her dear friends.  Cathy was a loyal and tenacious friend who leaves a legacy of devotion to those who were fortunate to love and be loved by her.  She was committed to those she welcomed into her heart, many of whom shared her friendship for life.  She had a deep and genuine caring for others, a love of her Savior Jesus Christ and a family who will miss her immensely. 

Cathy is survived by her husband, Greg Gibson, sister Betty Ann Peeler of Forest City NC, her nephew Chris Peeler and wife Emily along with their children Zane and Emily Peeler also of Forest City, nephew Bill Peeler of Chicago, her mother-in-law Cora Lee Gibson of Snow Camp, NC, sister-in-law Sybil Gibson of Raleigh, NC, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Allen and Carol Gibson of Apex, NC, niece Rachel Sessoms and husband Thomas of Apex, NC, and nephew Daniel Gibson of Denver, CO. 

A Celebration of Cathy’s Light and Life is planned for December 3^rd, 2023, at the Cliffs Valley Clubhouse in Travelers Rest, SC, from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m.  Directions to the event will be available upon entry at the Cliffs Valley Gatehouse at 2 Knightsridge Rd., Travelers Rest SC.
