Augusta, GA – Laura Louise Brown Wilson left this life to be with her Heavenly Father on Sunday, June 18, 2023. She suffered with heart disease for many years, dying at home in her sleep. She was a fighter, fighting the disease with all her strength and vigor, refusing to give up. Had she not been asleep, she would not have let the disease win. A memorial service will be held at Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church, 2261 Walton Way, Augusta, GA on Wednesday, June 28, 2023, at 11:00 A.M. The family will greet guests one hour before the service in the Fellowship Hall. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Sarah Louise Usry; father, L. Carter Brown (Coach); and her stepfather, Joseph Allison Murphy.
Laura was a member of Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church, professing her faith and relying on Him throughout her life. She was born in Memphis, TN on June 13, 1962, moving to Augusta when she was seven. She attended Merry Elementary, William Robinson Elementary, Tutt Middle School, and was a graduate of Academy of Richmond County. At ARC, she played tennis, receiving the Most Valuable Player award and was on the softball team. As was Laura’s mother, she was active in Young Life, a Christian organization for high schoolers, spending a week at their ranch in Colorado and on the work crew at Windy Gap. After graduating from ARC, she completed a two-year child development program at Augusta Technical College. She worked as a paraprofessional, a teacher’s assistant, in kindergarten and special education classrooms in Houston, TX, Austin, TX, and for twenty years in Richmond County at Monte Sano, Lake Forrest, and Deer Chase Elementary Schools.
She was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother. After the love of her family, her great love was horses. From a teenage until her death, she looked forward to riding and taking care of her horse. For her, a perfect weekend was going to the stable with her two grandchildren and watching them learn to love and care for Sleepy, their horse. Laura was a gentle, kindhearted soul who trusted and looked to her Savior, Jesus Christ.
Laura leaves behind her mother, Carlene Murphy; daughters: Sarah Zemula Wilson, and Allison Louise Hutto of Augusta; her grandchildren, Chloe Louise Hutto, Joseph Hutto, and Nolan Carroll; her brother, Douglas Brown; sister, Toni Carrington Climmett of Syracuse, NY; stepsister, Katy Murphy Sealy of Sealy, TX; and her partner, Randy Boone.
The family would like to thank her doctor, Dr. Darshak Karia, who took excellent care of her. The family expresses sincere appreciation and thanksgiving for the staff at the Heart Failure Clinic at Piedmont/University Hospital. The LVAD staff was always there for her, treating her with expertise and kindness.
Memorial contributions may be made to Muscular Dystrophy Association, 121 Executive Center Dr., #138, Columbia, SC 29210, in honor of Joseph Hutto, Laura’s grandson.
