Levings W. Laney
Augusta, GA – Levings Waddell Laney entered into rest on Thursday, September 14, 2017, at the age of 104.
Mr. Laney, a native of Birmingham, Alabama, was educated in the public schools of Birmingham and received his college degree from Georgia State University in Atlanta. He was also a graduate of Rutgers Graduate School of Banking, Rutgers University, New Jersey. He has lived in Augusta since 1952. Mr. Laney began his banking career with the Federal Reserve Bank and rose to the level of Senior Bank Examiner. In 1952 Levings joined the Georgia Railroad Bank and Trust Company of Augusta and rose to the position of executive Vice President. Three years before his retirement, he was assigned by Georgia Railroad Bank to Atlanta as Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of First Georgia Bank. After retirement, he was elected to a Director and Finance member of the Georgia State Bank, Martinez, and held that position until the bank was sold. The Banking Department of the State of Georgia recognized Levings for his fifty years of service in banking. For many years Mr. Laney was active in local civic and church activities, serving on the Boards of a number of organizations affiliated with the United Way. He was past president of the Augusta Lions Club and assisted in the organization of the local Family Counseling Center. He was a member of St. John United Methodist Church since 1952. Mr. Laney served as Chairman of the Administrative Board, Treasurer and Chair of several committees. He was active on a District and Conference level with the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church. For several years he was on the Finance and Administrative Committees of the North Georgia Conference. He was a Director and member of the Finance Committee of Simpsonwood, a Conference and retreat center of the North Georgia Conference. Mr. Laney was a member of the Augusta Country Club and a charter member of the Pinnacle Club. Levings enjoyed playing bridge and traveling.
Mr. Laney was the son of the late Levings W. Laney, Sr. and the late Gertrude Evers Laney. He was preceeded in death by his wife of seventy-three years: Jane Cooper Laney, brother: Commander James E. Laney, USN, Ret., two sisters: Edna L. Landrum and Minna Belle L. Lincoln; son-in-law: J. Thomas Altizer, and grandson: David Thomas Altizer.
Levings is survived by two daughters: Frances L. Altizer and Joan L. Piercy and her husband Charles; Four grandchildren: J. Michael Altizer (Nan) of Harpersville, AL, Karen Altizer Johnson (Collier), of Jacksonville, FL, D. Rodney Kight (Ashley) of Asheville, NC and K. Ryan Kight (Ashley) of North Augusta, SC. Devoted to his family, Levings is also survived by twelve great grandchildren.
The funeral will be Sunday, September 17, 2017 at 3:00PM at St. John United Methodist Church, 736 Greene Street with the Rev. Dr. Jody Alderman officiating. Visitation will be in the church sanctuary prior to the service beginning at 2PM.
