Lola Herskowitz

Augusta, GA – Lola Herskowitz, beloved wife to Herman Herskowitz and mother to Candace and Dr. Ian Herskowitz (Bonnie), grandmother to Barbara and Lucas Herskowitz and Elizabeth and Abbey Haynie, passed away on June 3, 2014 at University Hospital. She was mentally sharp as a tack until the end, but her body just wore out.

Lola Herskowitz was the daughter of Isaac and Celia Levinson, and sister to Roslyn Levinson (deceased). She was born in Harrison, New Jersey on November 10, 1925. Her family later moved to Brooklyn, New York where she was a graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School. While living in New York she enjoyed attending Broadway Theater and introduced her children to this love as well. She used to talk about how she would cut class in high school to see Frank Sinatra perform at the New York Paramount Theater and actually met Frank Sinatra at the Fountain Bleu Hotel in Miami Beach in the late 1950s.

She first worked as a bank teller at the Hanover Trust Company on Wall Street where she eventually became the secretary to the Vice President of the Bank. She continued to work there until she married and had her family. She returned to work in the late 1970s and early 1980s at the Fashion Institute of Technology in the Fashion district of Manhattan. She later worked at the Reading Anthracite Company in the Grand Central Station area of NYC until she retired.

Her love for dogs started at an early age when her father would bring home strays he found on the road in their neighborhood on Fifth Street in Harrison, working as a Plumber. Her family would raise them and make them pets. Over the years she enjoyed the companionship of a rescue miniature schnauzer named Pepper, a second miniature schnauzer named Pringle and later a Pug dog, Milo.

She was a vivacious and charismatic lady who remained active throughout her entire life. Even in her 80s she was still able to dance quite well. She was an avid reader as well as enjoyed seeing a good movie and watching her daytime soap operas. She will be greatly missed.

A graveside service will be held today, June 5, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. at Westover Memorial Park with Rabbi Ronald Gerson officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the American Heart Association, 190 Knox Abbott Drive, Casey, SC 29033 or to the Congregation Children of Israel, 3005 Walton Way, Augusta, GA 30909.

The family will receive those who wish to pay their respects to the memory of Lola Herskowitz at the home of her son, Dr. Ian Herskowitz at 136 Knob Hill Drive, Evans, GA, following the graveside service.
