Mrs. Lorene Whaley Diamond
Retired Gracewood
Mrs. Lorene Whaley Diamond went home to be with the Lord on October 11, 2010. She was a loving, dedicated wife, mother, stepmother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She was born in Tishimingo, MS to the late Ida Vernie and George Robert Pirtle and was the youngest of 8 children. She was a native of Augusta for 60 years. She was a member of Central Baptist Church and will continue to touch the lives of her family and friends through her Christian faith and witness.
Lorene enjoyed reading, china painting, gardening, and “talking scripture”. However, she was most content to dote on her family even through a long-lasting illness. She will be missed but will remain a living legacy in all those whose lives she touched.
She is preceded in death by her first husband of 34 years, Lem Whaley, Jr., her granddaughter, Elizabeth Avery, and her parents and siblings.
Lorene leaves to cherish her memories: her loving husband, Cecil, who always made her smile and laugh; her three children Danny (Trish) Whaley of Hephzibah; Theresa (Craig) McMullin of Edgefield and Lynn Avery of Columbia; her stepchildren Barbara (Roy) Mutimer of Evans, Ray (Jan) Diamond of Appling and Sherry (Joe) Keel of Waynesboro; her grandsons: David (Sarah) Avery, Daniel (Rachel) Avery, Crandall Ganus, Matthew Whaley, Brad (Heather) McMullin and numerous extended family members.
The funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 14, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Thomas Poteet and Son with Pastors Dan Collins and Tommy Whaley officiating. Pallbearers will be her grandsons along with family friend, Bobby Centers. Burial will follow at Bellevue Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 at Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors, 214 Davis Rd., Augusta, GA 30907 (706) 364-8484. Please sign the guestbook at
