Louise Shingleton Shivers
Martinez, GA LOUISE SHINGLETON SHIVERS, writer-in -residence at Georgia Regents University, died on Saturday, July 26, 2014 in Evans, Georgia.
Louise was the author of several acclaimed books. The novel Here to Get My Baby Out of Jail, published by Random House in 1983, was named Best First Novel of the Year by USA Today and was made into the film, Summer Heat, which had its glittering premiere at the Imperial Theatre. She was named Georgia Author of the Year for A Whistling Woman in 1993. My Shining Hour: A novelist’s memoir of World War II, was published in 2012 and she was completing work on Leaving Cold Harbor, a Civil War novel, at the time of her death.
All of Shivers’ fiction was set in her beloved eastern North Carolina and many of her characters are based on generations of her family, which she meticulously and joyfully researched. She had also written for numerous national magazines. She received a National Endowment for the Arts and later taught creative writing at the University of Florida. This spring she received the Summerville Award at GRU.
She loved to travel and was an accomplished cook known for her signature “Backyard Gumbo.”
Louise was the daughter of the late William W. Shingleton and Julia Cook Shingleton of Wilson, N.C. and was predeceased by two sisters and four brothers.
Survivors include her loving husband of 65 years, Quentin L. Shivers, daughter Sherrill (Malcolm) Cook of Phoenix ,daughter Beth (Larry) Siciliano of Augusta , son Mark Quentin Shivers of Augusta; grandsons Wally Reid Cook (Phoenix) and Max Siciliano (Atlanta); brothers Dr. Hugh (Lucy) Shingleton (Atlanta), Roddy (Sandy) Shingleton (Richmond) and Foy (Judith) Shingleton (Orlando), her writing partner Tom Turner (Augusta), and numerous beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A public memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 31, 2014 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Home, 214 Davis Road, followed by a visitation with family and friends. There will be a celebration of her life in late summer or early fall in Stantonsburg, N.C., her heart’s home.
