Lowery Carter “Coach” Brown
Augusta, GA – Carter Brown, 87, known as “Coach” by his former students and many friends, died on November 17, 2018 at University Hospital. He was born in McComb, MS on December 10, 1931 and raised in Summit, MS by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Gordon Brown. He was preceded in death by his parents and his three brothers, Gordon, Philip and Douglas.
Coach Brown was an outstanding tri-athlete at Summit High School earning an athletic scholarship to the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss). During his freshman (1951-1952) and sophomore years, he played on the varsity basketball and football teams, playing in the 1953 Sugar Bowl game against Georgia Tech. He was drafted after his sophomore year, spending two years in the Army. After his honorable discharge, he returned to Ole Miss playing varsity basketball for the next two years. His love for Ole Miss was a life-long passion and in spring of 2018 he returned for a reunion of Ole Miss athletes. There, he saw his name carved on the Wall of Champions. Upon graduation, he coached at Collierville, TN then at Oakhaven and Hillcrest High Schools in Memphis, TN. In 1971, he moved to Augusta and joined the faculty at Butler High School. There he coached football, basketball, track and cross-county. He found his most rewarding coaching experiences were in track and field. His teams won district and state honors. He retired from Butler in 1989.
He leaves behind his son, Douglas Gordon Brown, and daughter, Laura Louise Brown Wilson; three grandchildren: Joshua Gordon Brown, Sarah Zemula Wilson, and Allison Louise Hutto; two great-grandchildren: Chloe Louise Hutto and Joseph Hutto; and his former wife and care-giving friend, Carlene Murphy.
Memorial contributions may be made to Ole Miss Alumni Association, P.O. Box 1848, University, MS 38611 or to Muscular Dystrophy Association, 121 Executive Center Dr., #138, Columbia, SC 29210 in honor of Joseph Hutto, Coach Brown’s great-grandson.
A graveside service will be Wednesday, November 21, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. in Westover Memorial Park with Dr. Matt Rich officiating.
