Augusta, Ga – Entered into rest February 5th, 2010 at his residence, Lt. Col. Phillip E. Hoover, U.S. Army Retired, husband of late Elsie Mae Hoover and Carolyn M. Hoover.

Phillip was a native of Dayton, Ohio. During his senior year at the University of Dayton, he met and married Elsie Mae Stidham. To his delight, he also became a father to Karen Asble. One month after entering the U. S. Army, he was blessed with a baby girl, Susan Elaine, while on tour of duty to Ft. Monmouth, NJ. A year and a half later while serving in Hawaii, he lost a baby girl, Deborah Sue Hoover. She remains buried in Oahu. Two years later while again on tour of duty to Ft. Monmouth, he was delighted with a son, William Jeffery Hoover. During his 26 years of military service he earned the following awards: The National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 5 Campaign stars, Bronze Star medal (1st oak leaf cluster), Army Commendation medal (2nd oak leaf cluster), 4 overseas service bars, Meritorious Service medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign medal, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm and the Armed Forces Reserve Medal. Upon retirement, he moved to Hudson, Florida. Four years later he lost his wife to a battle with cancer. Upon her death he moved to Augusta, GA to begin his next chapter of life working with Civil Service, Signal Corps, Training Management Division at Fort Gordon. While having lunch at the Officers Club, he met the catering manager, Carolyn M. Smith. After a world wind romance they married. Completing 17 years of working at Ft. Gordon he retired. Three years later he lost Carolyn to cancer. He led a full exciting life. His only regret was that he never got to visit Australia.

Phillip is survived by his daughter Susan Hobaugh (Ed) of Clarksville, TN, Son, W. Jeffery Hoover of Sarasota, FL, step-children, Kay Cook (Charles, Jr.) of Appling, Jeffrey Smith (Carol) of Evans and Karen Asble (Barry) of Crestview, FL. He was a fun and loving “Grandpa” to Caitlin, Stephanie and Rebecca Langley. Cherished as “Phee” to Trey Smith, Michelle and Chase Cook, Erin and Zachary Smith; also a distant but loving relationship with Mike Asble, Kim Donaldson and Billy Asble. He is survived by eight great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Monday, February 8th, 2010 at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Thomas Poteet & Son with Chaplain Elsie Oldham presiding. Entombment will follow at Bellevue Memorial Gardens with full military honors.

The family will receive visitors at the funeral home from 12:00 P.M. until time of service.

The family would like to thank Dr. Paul Fischer and his staff, as well as Odyssey Hospice, for their care and support. To Teresa Rollins, RN, special thank you, for your kind, sincere and uplifting care. He looked forward to your visits as a positive point in his day.
